About the Exam

In this second section, we begin by analyzing the structure and function of the exam. Thereafter, the syllabus of this exam will be examined – allowing to you prepare for its specific exam circumstances.

shop information test

The ASVAB Automotive and Shop Information test is, of course, just one component of your ASVAB test – a test characterized by nine different exams. Nonetheless, this particular exam is of importance to many military disciplines, particularly those involved with the use of vehicles or materials. For instance, repairing a vehicle or constructing a shelter is core skills for the US military – something you will need to have a comprehensive knowledge of. The exam itself is divided into a computerized and written version, and you will need to discover which version you will be sitting. This is important given the different quantities and amount of time allotted to each test. Take a look at the table below for more information:

# Format of ASVAB Test Number of Questions Allotted Time
01 Computerized 11 7 Minutes
02 Written 25 11 Minutes

It’s worth emphasizing the time limitation of this exam, as you’ll only have approximately 38 seconds to answer each question. Given it takes around 10-12 seconds to view a question and all four answers, you will only have around 25 seconds thinking time – time you simply cannot afford to waste when the stakes are so high. The score you achieve in the ASVAB Automotive and Shop Information exam does not affect your AFQT Score – the score that determines your eligibility for many military positions. Instead, this test score goes toward what’s referred to as the Military Occupational Specialty score, or MOS Score. This latter score is the equivalent of an aptitude score – allowing examiners to determine whether you possess the relevant knowledge and skills to apply for a particular military specialty – with a high mark going a long way toward being selected from the fierce competition.

Preparing for the Exam

The ASVAB Automotive and Shop Information test, for instance, is relevant to military specialties such as:

  • Combat Operations (CO)
  • Operators and Food (OF)
  • General Maintenance (GM)
  • Surveillance and Communications (SC)
  • Mechanical Maintenance (MM)

In other words, you need to demonstrate you have an aptitude for these military specialties. Given the MOS Score depends, in part, on the ASVAB Automotive and Shop Information result, you will need to achieve a high mark should you wish to enlist in any of the aforementioned disciplines. This requires a thorough understanding of not only the theory underpinning the subject, but also the practical implications of what you learn. We will explore these subjects throughout the remainder of our study guide, as well as furnishing you with the opportunity to self-assess your own knowledge of this most important subject.

There are different types of question you need to prepare for on this exam. For example, you will be asked multiple choice questions, as well as pictorial questions – different formats that require an altered approach and focused preparation. We will go through some of these questions later on but, for now, you should be at least aware of what’s asked on the exam. It’s also a good idea to practically learn as you go through each section – as you will probably have access to many of the devices and processes explicated throughout this study guide. This will help to embed functions in your mind in a highly efficient way. This guide will dip through every section you will be expected to know, such as:

  • Internal Combustion Engine
  • Automotive Systems
  • Gauges, Pumps, and Tools
  • Maintenance and Troubleshooting
  • Shop Tools and Materials

You need to go through each section in turn, as each section will assume the knowledge of previous sections in many cases. If you find yourself stuck on any particular topic, review the material or, alternatively, try to understand the definitions of terms used in that particular section. It might come in handy, for instance, to take a look at pictorial representations of what’s going on, as you will become more familiar with what we’re discussing. At the same time, though, you should possess a comprehensive knowledge of each of these five sections. Study each section as preparation for the quiz at the end of this study guide – as this self-assessment will serve to cement many of the ideas learned throughout your studies.

The next section analyses the automotive component of this exam – as we learn about the internal combustion engine and associated systems.
