In this section, we took a thorough look at the ASVAB Paragraph Comprehension exam. We first began by looking at the exam components, learning about the amount of time and questions you’ll have available on the day. This information is valuable for time management reasons. We then looked at the four types of question you can anticipate to present itself on the day of your exam – and it’s the focus from these questions that should inform your entire study approach. Next, we detailed some rigorous study approaches, helping you understand how you should deal with each question on the day.
When it comes to paragraph comprehension, always think carefully about each word in the sentence. It’s quite easy to overlook vital clues in a sentence – such as reading the word ‘not’ or ‘all’ – which can hugely transform the meaning of sentences. Let’s not forget, at the same time, that the questions posed to you will be ones designed to focus on specifics. While it’s worthwhile to gauge the overall meaning on first reading, this will not be sufficient to answer the questions successfully. Some of the questions will be nuanced, meaning you will have to interpret the paragraph in the most appropriate way.
What Next?
Many of the questions won’t even be direct. In other words, some questions will be phrased in such a way to foment ambiguity about the meaning of the paragraph. For instance, you might be asked a question which compares and contrasts information in the paragraph. You might be asked to choose the “most accurate” answer – as there will be no 100% correct answers available. This type of interpretative ability is a skill you must learn to succeed at this exam. In addition, the communication skills you will develop will complement this skill – allowing you to perform your military duties as they should be performed.
