Testing Tips

Do not be afraid to ask an examiner if you are not clear on the meaning of a question - chances are other candidates are having exactly the same problem you have.

Study Strategies

It’s all well and good knowing what to study when it comes to math, but you will also need to know how to study. This section aims to equip you with the necessary skills required to study math effectively.

Within this vast corpus of ASVAB Mathematics Knowledge to digest and absorb, how do you intend to start? It may appear overwhelming at first but, bit by bit, you’re sure to cover each type of question accordingly. In this section, though, we take a look at a handful of study strategies that should be of value to your studies. Bear in mind, though, that the best strategy is one that is coordinated effectively with your studies – meaning you need to plan and organize your time in the weeks and months ahead. As well as this, you should have some idea how well you are performing in each area of the ASVAB Mathematics Knowledge exam as, if you do not, you run the risk of performing poorly in many aspects of this test.

Begin by determining where your strengths and weaknesses lie. By possessing this knowledge, you will know how to apportion the right amount of time to each section – with proportionately more time for those sections you find difficult or haven’t yet covered sufficiently. Take your time with sections you haven’t yet studied, and begin by looking at the simplest possible example of that type of question. Once the basic principles of such a question are grasped, move onto a more challenging problem and continue until such point where you grasp the entire topic. For questions you don’t yet understand, learn to retrospectively analyze the answer, and learn the methodology in a step-by-step fashion.

Identifying Strengths and Weaknesses

To retrospectively understand a question, you only need to work backwards. This is one of the formats we employ at ASVAB Test Study, as it means you can come to terms with where you are going wrong. The best strategy is as follows: attempt the question first, and only then study the explanation of the answer. This allows you to specifically identify those areas of weakness, meaning you can rectify such problems very quickly. If you do not attempt to answer the question, though, you will lose this benefit as you will not know where your strengths and weaknesses actually lie. It might take that little bit more effort, but it will reap dividends in the long run.

Always write down lists of formulae for each particular section. You need to actively memorize these formulae as they will come in handy at some point during the exam. By memorizing the formulae, this means you should first understand the terms of the formula, as well as getting to grips with why the formula works. In other words, try to comprehend what you are learning as opposed to memorizing it for memorizations sake. The best way to embed the formula in your mind is simply to use it as much as possible! This means partaking in as many ASVAB Mathematics Knowledge questions as you can, such as those provided here in our extensive resources.

Another strategy we recommend at ASVAB Test Study is to partake in as many sample questions as possible. This, as before, will help you to identify your areas of strength and areas of weakness. It allows you to know which topics you find easier than others, meaning you can alter your study timetable accordingly. Evidently, you do not want to spend too much time on sections you find very easy. The amount of time you proportion to each section should be dependent upon how you perform in questions and quizzes as advocated here. It’s also important you have a structured approach in terms of reading and grappling with what the question is actually asking. For this, you should follow each of these steps:

  • Read the question and understand what they are asking you.– Attempt the question, even when you are unsure.
  • When you have finished your attempt, analyze the answer and find out specifically where you might have went wrong.
  • Practise a similar problem and solve it with the aforementioned solution in mind.
  • Begin a more difficult problem and build your math skills accordingly.

In the ASVAB Mathematics Knowledge exam, you will not have access to a calculator. This means you have to become familiar with working out problems by hand. Be sure to jot down ideas as you think of them, as this can make all the difference between success and failure. Similarly, only attempt the easiest questions first, leaving the more challenging questions until the end of your exam. This is a time management approach more than anything else, as you should maximize your math score as early as possible. Think of the alternative, where you stick rigidly with difficult problems, meaning you do not have the time to absorb the easier marks elsewhere on the exam.

Over the next three sections of this ASVAB Mathematics Knowledge study guide, we will go through all the types of math problem you need to know. You will be provided with examples of each type of problem, as well as explaining many of the answers to cement your understanding even further. The sections will be divided as follows:

  • Algebra
  • Numbers
  • Geometry

Some of these areas are, of course, more prominent on the exam than others. But, you will need to tackle each and every section if you wish to attain a high result on your exam. Given the high propensity for candidates to achieve highly, it’s worth taking some extra time to ensure you not only understand the material, but have no problem applying it to somewhat more challenging problems. This will have the dual effect of acing this exam, all the while cultivating those necessary analytical skills required for the duties of the ablest military official.

Algebra forms a core part of your ASVAB Mathematics Knowledge syllabus. The next section deals exclusively with what you need to know.
