The 6th century BC Chinese teacher, Confucius, once remarked that by not knowing the force of words, it is impossible to know more. What Confucius was getting at is that it’s the force of language which allows us to learn, not only the meaning of words, but also the value of communication itself. It’s this value which is demanded of you in the ASVAB Word Knowledge exam, a test that’ll look to examine the depths of your existing vocabulary. The candidate who demonstrates greater diversity and capacity for language will be the same candidate who has greater potential for communication skills. Along with the paragraph comprehension exam, the ASVAB Word Knowledge component plays its part in the determination of this ability.

In this ASVAB Word Knowledge study guide, we’re going to initially take a look at the structure of the exam itself, before going on to look at what topics you need to take into consideration. Thereafter, we’ll be detailing some effective study strategies for the exam, as well as sampling some of these questions. Toward the end of the study guide, we conclude with a Word Knowledge quiz replicated on the type of questions you can expect on the day of your exam.

About ASVAB Word Knowledge Exam

The ASVAB Word Knowledge test is just one part of your overall test – constituting one of nine main parts. The combined result from all nine exams constitutes what’s known as the AFQT result. However, there are two different ways you can take the exam: the Computerized Format and the Written Format. This depends, among other things, on your location and the resources allocated to deal with those applying. This division is important as the quantity of questions and availability of time is different for each format. For example, if we take a look at the ASVAB Word Knowledge formats we find:

asvab written test
# Format of ASVAB Test Number of Questions Allotted Time

02 Written 35 11 Minutes

Quite a difference! However, you do need to bear in mind that scoring well on the ASVAB Word Knowledge exam may constitute more relevance to some military disciplines as opposed to others. Depending on the career you wish to embark upon, you should make yourself aware of the individual conditions and requirements for each military position. Scoring well on the Word Knowledge test demonstrates proficiency at communication and, therefore, would prove most useful to those careers that rely on such a skill.
