Improving Your Vocabulary

Many of your ASVAB exams, such as the Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension tests, will require you to enhance both your spelling and your general vocabulary. This section offers some useful advice and tips to improve both of these important abilities.

asvab tips

We’ve already taken a look at how to improve your grammar in great detail, but how are we to improve our spelling? Many people would take the contrarian position that some people are simply good at it while others lack the knack, so to speak. This section is here to demonstrate that it is indeed possible to improve your spelling ability in a remarkably short period of time. Yes, it requires effort and yes, it can be frustrating. Nevertheless, the rewarding feeling of having improved this skill is worth it in the end. Having accurate spelling is critically important to the development of effective communication skills as a military officer; therefore benefiting you in your examinations as well as your future professional career.

The first part of this section is going to take you through some tips to improve your spelling skills. We’re then going to go on to discuss some of the most commonly misspelled words, which will give you a huge advantage in both the short and the long term. In the final section, we’re going to analyse a list of relevant military words that you should be able to recognise and put into use. This entire section, therefore, aims to significantly upgrade your spelling and word skills in a highly relevant way.

Improving Your Spelling!

There are many simple and effective ways to improve your spelling; some of the most important are listed below:

  • When you encounter a new word or even a recognisable word with an unusual spelling, write it down in a notepad and make sure to revisit this notepad at regular intervals to reinforce the spelling of the new word.
  • Try to analyse the spelling of words not in terms of letters but rather in terms of sounds. Languages are built on the transmission of sounds in the form of syllables. Once you become more familiar with the spelling of repeated syllables, it’ll eventually become second nature to spell even a non-familiar word.

  • One of the best ways to become familiar with both tips above is to read more. Reading has three huge benefits. First, it will familiarise you with the correct spelling of words; second, it opens the opportunity to present new words that you can learn from and jot down accordingly; and third, it provides the opportunity to speak words out loud and become familiar with the connection between sounds and the spelling of syllables. These three reasons render reading a vital part of your study skills, even if you limit it to 20 minutes reading per day.
  • Once you’ve formed a substantial list of words in your notepad, get a friend or family member to test you. This is a simple method that you can practice at any point and will put into practice all the study you’ve hitherto performed. Regular testing, either on our program or at home, will have the effect of exposing you to a higher standard of spelling, grammar and word level that you’ve been unable to cultivate until this point.

The best way to improve your spelling skills is, of course, to make the effort. Only if you sincerely engage in your work will you reap the full spectrum of rewards. It can be challenging at first, but once you develop a firm foundation, you’ll find it becomes easier and easier as time goes by. These tips are a certain way to help you reach that goal.

Remember – correct spelling, grammar, and reading comprehension are fundamental skills you will be tested on in your ASVAB exam. Prepare accordingly!
