About the Exam

In order to be able to study effectively, you will need to grasp an overall understanding of what the exam is about and what you are expected to know. This section serves to clear these problems up.

The syllabus for the ASVAB Arithmetic Reasoning test focuses on concepts – ones which you need to grasp to answer each question. As the syllabus is conceptual-oriented, you cannot “memorize” the exam and, instead, you must interpret the exam as one determined on developing skills. You did not learn to cycle a bike on the first attempt and, similarly, you will not learn reasoning skills overnight. This is a long-term goal and, consequently, means you need to prepare well in advance. But, by learning what appears on the exam, you place yourself in a stronger position in terms of preparation and focus. The following topics are indicated to appear on the ASVAB Arithmetic Reasoning test:

  • Numbers – This section focuses on real numbers, imaginary numbers, fractions, decimals, and whole numbers. These questions resolve around basic formulas involving numbers in a wide range of formats.
  • Percentages – These tend to involve cost-related activities such as sale prices, discounts, and compound interest, among others.
  • Proportion & Area – These questions look at how objects are proportioned to one another, such as involving scale and ratios.
  • Arithmetic Concepts – This section looks at the fundamentals of addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication, particularly with reference to time and speed concepts.

What Next?

Note the problem solving nature of these categories, while also taking note of the distinctions of the categories. If you viewed sample questions on the net, you might find it difficult to categorize everything, as they all appear as more-or-less the same thing. By focusing on each section, you now have the opportunity to divide your study time up accordingly, apportioning each slice of time toward one particular section. You might also note some sections you enjoy, while isolating those you find more challenging. Either way, keep this system in mind as you progress throughout this ASVAB Arithmetic Reasoning study guide. Another point worth considering is the need to practice self-assessment questions. The purpose of this action is to discover where your strengths and weaknesses lie. Possessing such knowledge, you can tailor your study program to tackle the areas you are having the most difficulty in. This will, in the long-term, help you achieve a higher result.
